How To Use Tabs in Word 2007

Tabs are used to align text and numbers on a page. Word 2007 has default tab stops set every 1.27 cm. You can set manual tab stops using four different alignment types (left, center, right and decimal) and a Bar tab to create vertical lines on a page.
The Tab key on the keyboard is used to move the insertion point to the next tab stop.

Setting Tab Stops

Tab stops can be set using the ruler or the Tab dialogue box.

Using the Ruler

  1. Select the paragraph(s) you wish to set tabs to
  2. Click the Tab Alignment button to the left of the ruler until the alignment type you need is shown
  3. Tab Alignment button
    Left Left
    Center Centre
    Right Right
    Decimal Decimal
    Bar Bar
  4. Click the required position on the ruler for your tab
  5. Text aligned using the different tab stops

Using the Tab Dialogue Box

  1. Click the Home tab on the Ribbon
  2. Click the Dialogue Box Launcher arrow in the corner of the Paragraph group
  3. Click the Tabs button
  4. The Tabs dialogue box
  5. Type the required setting in the Tab stop position: box
  6. Select an Alignment for your tab stop
  7. Select a Leader if desired
  8. Click Set
  9. Click Ok after setting all the tabs

Removing Tabs

To remove a tab, simply click and drag the tab off the ruler and onto the page.
