Settlement Of Privacy Blunder

Google buys it self free, and promises a final repentance and improvement after Buzz blunder.

When Google launched its online service social buzz in February this year, they committed an enormous privacy blunderr: Users who signed up, got their contact lists from your e-mail service, Gmail automatically converted to friend lists, and these were immediately exposed, without any restriction.

The error raised a storm of protests, and Google changed the settings immediately.

Seven U.S. Gmail users sued Google for invasion of privacy, and the lawsuit was granted status as a class action.

This lawsuit was resolved through Friday a settlement that cost Google $ 8,500,000, without admit to having committed any offense.
Just under 6.5 million U.S. dollars going to non-profit organizations working for better privacy both generally and on the web, including the Center for Democracy and Technology.

In excess of $ 2,000,000 goes to the lawyers who brought the lawsuit and who worked out the settlement with Google.

The seven Gmail users that triggered the lawsuit gets $ 2500 each.

The same day as the settlement became known, Google announced that it intends to simplify its privacy policy, by imposing the same rules for all services, including Gmail, Talk, Calendar and Docs. Service Dashboard provides the opportunity to adjust the profile of all Google services you use.

In an email to the New York Times Chairman Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center that the new rules deny the user the ability to decide what information Google will gather around their use of each service. Rotenberg said the U.S. FTC Competition Authority must examine what consequences the changes get, especially for those who have previously given Google access to personal information.
